Can't access shared folders

Two pc's both running XP SP2. Have set up shared folders on both PC's.
Both PC's on Linksys router.

Can see the shared folders from both PC's. From one PC, when I click on the
shared folder, a login screen comes up. I enter the user id and password
for the remote pc, the login in screen immediately comes back with the
userid but with the password field cleared.

Just to make sure I'm actually logged into the remote PC, I first click on
the remote PC in the left hand pane of Windows Explorer - so the shared
folders are shown in the right hand pane. I've confirmed that Everyone and
the user I'm trying to log in as have full control of the folder.

I've disabled Simple File Sharing on both PC's.

What's going on?

Thanks

Is the account (non-Guest) properly activated for network access? Identical,
non-blank password on both computers? All groups properly activated?

Make sure that you don't have a misconfigured or overlooked personal firewall,
or other security component. There are several other possibilities too, and any
might be the cause of your problem. Read this article with an open mind.

Thanks for the references. I've read thru them and checked to insure the
required services and settings are correct.
Still no difference.
I've got accounts with the same name and passwords on both pc's.

On the 'Server' - i.e., the pc on which I want to see the files, I've added
the account to Allow Network Access in Local Security Policy. The account
is not in the Deny Network Access. For yuks, I ran the command line command
to activate the user account.
I can print from the client to the 'server'. Windows Firewall is off. I am
running Symantec Client Security which includes a Firewall. But, it that
were the problem, I'd expect a message that I couldn't access the server,
not this funky userid/password thing.

Anything else you can think of?

Thanks

Look at the sequence followed when authenticating.

And note the difference between Sharing (Network Permissions) and Security
(Local Permissions), though you must have both to access thru the network.

Is SCS properly configured? Every personal firewall presents different
challenges.
