Cant access secure websites

Since the other day when i got my new internet
connection, i have been unable to access any website that
aquires me to log on or insert personal details such as
signing into hotmail, messenger, or signing into
virgin.net.
I have downloaded some security updates but i am still
getting the message "The page cannot be displayed....."
Can anyone help me ??
