can't access others on network

G

Guest

I have 4 computers networked. Main computer directly to ADSL router and the
rest wireless USB to AP attached to router. Have checked the router and
everyone is listed in the table.

all are xp pro with sp2 installed.

on main computer can see others but get error message that the person was
not accessible and that the network path was not found.

on the 3 other machines they can only see themselves.

they can ping the main computer but not others.

the mian computer can see them in net view but can't ping them

we can all access the internet.

I have checked the computer browser and the Netbios over tcp and they are
correct.

I have given everyone new computer names and change the name of the
workgroup.

I am using the windows xp firewall and have it set up for file sharing. All
other computers the same.

this is driving me crazy as I have tried all the things in everyone elses
messages to no avail.

anyone got any ideas .....please

Lyn

Lyn,

Does "I have checked the computer browser" mean that you have run "browstat
status" on all 4 computers and compared the output? If not, please do that
first.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/browstat-utility-from-microsoft.html>

Next, check registry setting restrictanonymous on all computers.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/07/restrictanonymous-and-your-server.html>

And recheck for a misconfigured or overlooked firewall. Keep an open mind here
- it's your problem, so it's your advantage to read this article too.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/your-personal-firewall-can-either-help.html>

Finally, read my troubleshooting guide, starting from the beginning. Maybe
something there will make you see something you haven't checked.

Lyn

Lyn,

OK, your problem is simple. Maybe.

The good news is you don't have a protocol problem, at least what I can see, no
IPX/SPX, NetBEUI, or IPV6.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/fix-network-problems-but-clean-up.html>

You do have a classic case of browser conflict. Look at browstat on all 4
computers. Compare it to the examples in my article.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/browstat-utility-from-microsoft.html>

All 4 of your computers have elected themselves master browsers. This won't do.
You can have only 1 master browser in the domain (workgroup). Read this
article.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/04/nt-browser-or-why-cant-i-always-see.html>

Now the browser conflict may be the underlying problem, or it may be a symptom.
You'll have to make sure you don't have other problems.

Misconfigured or overlooked firewalls.

In order for anybody to access the registry on Lyn, when running browstat or at
any other time, you have to have authentication / authorisation setup. If not,
the "error = 5" has to be expected.

You still need to check the above items, and read each of the articles I listed,
if you want to solve your problems.

How did you disable the browser? The browser is only used for cataloguing local
resources (shared folders and printers), there is no connection between it and
the internet. If Bel's internet connection is going on and off, you have
another problem. Exactly what symptoms does Bel exhibit - be as precise as
possible please.

I disabled the browser by going to administration tools - services.
I stopped and then disabled the computer browser. was that the right way to
do it or have I misunderstood.

That's the right procedure. I'm not aware of any legit connection between

Thanks Chuck for all your help.

I ended up after 4 days having to get a computuer tech to come in. After a
few hours he hadn't done much more than I had. Then he put something in the
Lanmanager in the registry (which we are still not sure if that solved it),
and we uninstalled sp2 on one of the computers and when he booted up they all
worked, but intermittedly on some. We then checked the wireless Access Point
and the transmitting light on it was going from green to red all the time.
(when I checked it a few days ago it was green at the time). So we replaced
that and away we went. Everyone can see each other, share files and my
printer. We then reinstalled sp2 back on the machine that we had taken it off
on.

So again many thanks for all your help.
