>can't access mshome workgroup<

Can someone tell me what needs to be enabled when you
have an XP home laptop that can't access it's own
workgroup. When I click on 'view network computers'
I get "mshome is not accessible. You might not have
permission to use the network resource"

I have cable internet via a Mediacom cable modem. The
modem is connected to a D-Link router by ethernet, the
router is wireless w/ethernet ports. I have an XP pro
desktop physically connected to the same router
(ethernet) and it sees itself fine within mshome,
although It can't see the laptop nor ping it.
I have peer to peer checked along with tcp/ip and ipv6
is unchecked within the "networking services" window.

I'm noticing one thing that may or may not be relavent,
the desktop has the default gateway as 192.168.0.1 The
laptop has it as 192.168.1.1
They can both ping thier own gateway, but not the
other's. I don't know if that is normal or not.
(considering the setup) If anyone can 'unconfuse' me on
this issue I would be most grateful. THANX N ADVANCE.

Greetings Wayne,

The Windows XP ICF by default will block file and printer sharing if it is
enabled. Disable the XP firewall while troubleshooting and if you're running
any third party firewalls such as ZoneAlarm, Sygate, or Norton Internet
Security make sure it is properly configured and not blocking access between
the machines. Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP on all computers. Details here.

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)

Hi Eric, I've Enabled NetBIOS Over TCP/IP on both. Now on
the laptop I'm able to get within mshome workgroup and
see myself (laptop) but it doesn't see the desktop. Same
for the desktop, it STILL doesn't see the laptop in
mshome even though the laptop sees itself in mshome. I'm
totally lost on why they can't access each other
especially now that they both are showing up in mshome.
(on thier on respective screens) Thier IPs are on the
same segment.
Could the mshome workgroups be two different workgroups
all together????? Any other suggestions please pass them
on. Thanks Again. Wayne B.

Wayne,

On the XP Pro computer, check to see if Simple File Sharing (Control Panel -
Folder Options - View - Advanced settings) is enabled or disabled. With XP Pro
on the LAN with XP Home, you need to have SFS enabled.

For XP Home, OR for XP Pro with Simple File Sharing enabled, make sure that the
Guest account is enabled (thru Local User Manager (Start - Run - "lusrmgr.msc")
for XP Pro), on each computer.

Cheers,
Chuck

Wayne,

What is the LAN ip address of the router? 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1? THAT is
the correct default gateway for both, assuming both are connected to the router.

Make sure that both are setup to "Obtain an IP address automatically" and
"Obtain DNS server address automatically". Then make sure Internet Connection
Sharing is off on both. And finally, make sure DHCP is enabled on the router.

Cheers,
Chuck
