Jake,

The browstat log is most useful when examined from 2 or more computers together.

Are you sure that disabling the firewalls (what ones did you disable?) is
productive?

Hi Chuck,

thanks for the help. both computers (laptop and desktop) are on XP SP2
(home edition). windows firewall and zone alarm firewall were both disabled
for everything below. i use a linksys router--using ethernet cables for both
computers currently, though sometimes will access internet wirelessly for
laptop. workgroup name is "JFGNET". desktop name is "Gateway". laptop name
is simply "Laptop".

the problem is still the same. i can access the laptop from the desktop
(i.e., shared files), but not vice versa. the strange thing is i can still
print from the laptop (printer is connected to the desktop) and when i have
iTunes running on both computers i can share music files between both
computers in either direction.

Jake,

If you read the firewall article carefully, you will note that disabling Zone
Alarm is not always an effective diagnostic. You should either configure it
properly, or un install it.

If you can provide "ipconfig /all" from Laptop, we can do diagnosis in depth.

Jake,

OK, here's what we know so far.
- Name / address resolution OK. Hybrid / Unknown should work fine.
- No gratuitous protocols - just NBT.
- Both computers on the 192.168.1/24 subnet, both connecting to DHCP server
(router) and getting settings.
- Both computers acknowledge GATEWAY as master browser, and GATEWAY sees both
computers ("2 servers in domain JFGNET").
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/browstat-utility-from-microsoft.html>

The most likely cause of this is a firewall problem - start with this link and
read the entire article, reading linked articles where appropriate.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/your-personal-firewall-can-either-help.html>

Next, let's diagnose the problem in depth.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/using-cdiag-without-assistance.html>

Take the following code (everything inside the "#####"). (Please verify computer
names and ip addresses).

1. Open Notepad. Ensure that Format - Word Wrap is not checked. Highlight
then Copy the code (Ctrl-C), precisely as it is presented, and Paste (Ctrl-V)
into Notepad. Verify, and correct, names and addresses if necessary.
2. Save the Notepad file as "cdiag.cmd", as type "All Files", into the root
folder "C:\".
3. Run it by Start - Run - "c:\cdiag".
4. Wait patiently.
5. When Notepad opens up displaying c:\cdiag.txt, first check Format and
ensure that Word Wrap is NOT checked! Then, copy the entire contents (Ctrl-A
Ctrl-C) and paste (Ctrl-V) into your next post.

Do this from all computers, please, with all computers powered up and online.

OK, Jake,

Your original statement was accurate. The only problem you show is that Laptop
can't net view Gateway - by name or by IP address. And browstat run on Laptop
can't resolve Gateway's address. Please read all of both of these articles, and
follow links to other articles:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/your-personal-firewall-can-either-help.html>
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/browstat-utility-from-microsoft.html>

Also, read all of this article, item by item, and linked articles:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/troubleshooting-network-neighborhood.html>

Specific items to look for:
- Unknown or misbehaving personal firewall on either computer.
- Corrupt LSP / Winsock on Laptop.

Jake,

I can explain most of it, but I need a clue what is over your head. If you
cannot figure this out, I'll try to explain in more detail, but you have to help
me.

It's the weekend now. I can explain some easier in email, if you'd like to try
that.

chuck, it's fixed! i found the solution on this website...
http://www.michna.com/kb/wxnet.htm

and it actually worked. i didn't have to change any firewall settings.

You have both the following symptoms:

You can ping the computer by IP and by name.
When you type on another computer, replacing computername with the name of
the inaccessible computer:
net view \\computername

you get one of the various "Error 5" error messages, like "System error 5
has occurred. Access is denied" or "Error 5: You do not currently have access
to this file. ..."

This is in some cases caused by a registry setting named RestrictAnonymous.
Go to the computer which you cannot access, start a registry editor and
change the following registry value.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
\SYSTEM
\CurrentControlSet
\Control
\Lsa
Value name: RestrictAnonymous
Value type: DWORD

If the value is 1 or even 2, change it to 0, reboot and retest. If the
problem is solved, leave the value at zero. If not, you can change it back if
you like.

Check immediately afterwards and again after a reboot, whether the value
changes back to non-zero on its own. If that happens, then you have to find
the culprit, which can be spyware, a worm, or a badly designed security
program. In this case this procedure most likely solved your problem, but
then the bad software stepped back in and recreated the problem.

In this case you can try to disable running programs and services and retry
until you find out which one is responsible. Or you could try to download and
run RegMon from www.sysinternals.com. In RegMon set a filter for the registry
value in question (or wade through all the registry accesses), set the
problem value to zero, then observe which program accesses it and changes it
back to 1. Locate that program and uninstall it. And please don't forget to
report the bad program here, so we can get a list of offending programs.

Two known Trojans that change this value (and also some network access
policies) call themselves mcafee32.exe and msconfg.exe, trying to pose as the
antivirus program of that name or as a Microsoft configuration program module.
