CanoScan software under OS X?

A

AES

Is there any updated (non-Classic) version of the CanoScan software that
originally came with my several-year-old Canon N1220U USB scanner that
will run on OS X? (hopefully including the scanner button initiated
auto-startup that was one of the features of this software in its OS 9
implementation)

I'm able to operate this scanner OK under OS X using a downloaded Canon
driver in combination with Photoshop Elements, GraphicConverter, or
VueScan but with a non-trivial learning curve to become fluent in using
any of these.

Hate to pay bucks for new hardware and software upgrades and then as
a reward lose the investments I've made in learning to use the earlier
versions . . .

Get the Canon Toolbox from Canon's site and just scan and save the file.
Then you can use any app that will deal with jpg's and such.

Where on the Canon site can you find the Toolbox?

I did a search of the site and didn't find a Toolbox for my model.

Thanks for asking this, because that's my impression also that no
toolbox for the N1220U model and OS X seems to be available which is
what led me to ask the initial question.

(It's possible the old OS 9 Toolbox could be run in Classic, but I
believe that's not what either of us want.)

I also have the same model (N1220U) and have found it an excellent
scanner and when I want to use it I have to fire up Classic where it
works fine, but I wish there was a toolbox that would allow it to run
unver OS 10.

Well, let me repeat, you can download a Canon OS X driver that lets you
run this scanner in native OS X from within Photoshop Elements,
GraphicConverter and/or VueScan, using their particular interfaces. All
of these work; I haven't used any of them enough to decide which of them
I like best. It's possible there are other options, e.g. Acrobat,
Illustrator, maybe even TextEdit or Keynote?

It has been awhile since I got mine downloaded. But the toolbox for all of
them seems to be the same. I used the one for the LIDE30 and it works just
fine.

I just tried the site, and it is the typical canon mess. I couldn't get
where I wanted to go with Safari, but could with Thunderbird.

Use something other than Safari

Go to canonusa

Pick support > scanners >Mac OSX Compatibility

THEN do a site search for 'toolbox'

Results page should show 13 pages, pick the LiDE30 FAQs

Next page, select drivers, then English (or whichever applies), then the
toolbox selection should become available.

The toolbox is nothing to write home about, but it does give generic useage
for the scanners.

The OSX driver is generally for photoshop, although as you found out, there
are a few other apps that will use it directly.

The toolbox is the solution to a generic use of the Canon scanners and I've
posted how to find it. Remember, it seems that the toolbox is the same for
all the Canonscan scanners. I'm using a 676U with the LiDE toolbox (heck, I
may even be using the driver, its so long ago I don't remember).

VueScan doesn't use a separate scanner driver; it communicates directly
with the scanner. I use a CanoScan N1240U with VueScan under OS X without
any of Canon's software installed.

You're right...a real mess!

I got led down a different trail, but the secret seems to be to keep
looking for (newer) LiDE30 info rather than the (older) N1220U model
I actually have (for which the web site data has perhaps never been
updated).

Now, I'll see if it actually works with the 1220U . . .

It does on my 676U, so you should be OK.

Heck, I think I even installed the LiDE30 driver too! ;-)

The version of CanoScan Toolbox X on my iMac G4/800 (OS X 10.3.8) is
4.1.3.0. It works with my LiDE 30 scanner.

Go to the following page to get the latest software for your scanner:
oryid=351&modelid=8007>
If you have trouble with that link, use this one (takes you to the same
page):

Thanks for this suggestion; but when I go to that page and click the
"Drivers / Software" link that appears on it, I am forwarded to a page
which contains the following text:

ScanExpert v3.8.0X Application for Mac OS X v10.1.3 or higher
in "Native Mode"

The ScanExpert v3.8.0X Application is compatible with the iMac,
G3 & G4 systems with built-in USB ports. The ScanExpert v3.8.0X
Application is for the CanoScan scanners N650U/N656U/N1220U
running on Mac OS X v10.1.3 or higher in "Native Mode". This
self-extracting application installer assists the user with a guided
installation procedure through an intuitive interface. Once the file
has UnStuffed, double-click ScanExpert_v380X to begin installation.

(Note: Adobe Photoshop 7.0 for Mac OS X or Adobe Photoshop
Elements 2.0 for Mac OS X must be installed prior to installing
ScanExpert v3.8.0X for the CanoScan N650U/N656U/N1220U
scanners).

Note that this text does not contain the word "Toolbox" or the number
4.1.3, and I do not see those terms anywhere else on this or the
preceding page.

Note also the final paragraph: Photoshop or Photoshop Elements must be
installed before even installing the "ScanExpert" software described
here.

I do now have the Toolbox X 4.1.3 software on my OS X, though I've yet
to actually try it with my N1120U, and its interface seems to be quite
different than the earlier OS 9 Toolbox. I acquired this Toolbox,
however, by following some series of LIDE-30 related links and searches
which I can no longer recall. I was not able to get to any "Toolbox"
links by following any N1220U links or through any searches using
"N1220U", at least in my series of attempts.

Thus, while Toolbox 4.1.3 may indeed work with the N1220U series, I
didn't find that Canon has updated its links for that older series to
point to the newer OS X 4.1.3 Toolbox (but I could well have overlooked
something . . . ).

As I found out earlier on, the toolbox seems to be just an app for all the
canoscan series, using whichever driver is appropriate for your particular
model. I found that out just by trying it because Canon sure wasn't much
help!
