Canoscan 4000 scanner stops during scan (1000dpi only) any idea why?

Can anyone give some advise? Canon not much help, suggested I send it
in to repair, upon further talk about issue, thinks it's a filmGets
issue and offered no sulution.
Have a Canoscan 4000, that is at least 2 years old, used it on an old
computer with Windows me and original Filmgets software. Upgraded my
computer that now has XP home. Also downloaded upgraded FilmGets from
Canon. Been trying to batch scan negatives into Arcsoft PhotoBase
software for cataloging. Scan at 1000/250dpi, no dust removal. Scanner
makes a ruogh noise and stops after scanning in 3-4 strips and have to
turn off and on to get it working again. Downloaded Vuescan trial
version and tried it, still makes a faint, strange noise, but works
fine otherwise. Tried scanning into PhotoShop 7 with filmGets, works
well with everything, except at the 1000dpi mode, including batch
scanning at 4000/4000 dpi with no problems9no strange noise, nothing).
The fact that it works at every other dpi than 1000 is confusing me.
I've tried un-installing-re-installing FilmGets, even downloaded the
newer version twice and went back to old version, nothing works. Is it
possible it is in the machine, and not the software? Is it worth trying
to get repaired? Reading some of the messages here the newer scanners
are not as good as these dedicated film scanners were.
Sorry, long post, I know. Thanks for any help, linprad

for rough cataloging at 250/1000dpi would you be better with an
inexpensive flatbed that handles multiple negative strips at a time?

for 4000dpi scanning I think the Canon will be better than a flatbed and
not too far behind the latest film scanners. (lots of tests on the web
show this). So I would get a flatbed for cataloging and keep the old
Canon for your 4000dpi scans. Bruce
