Hi
Will the Canon ip4200 & 5200 take compatable carts?

There are presently no aftermarket chips available for the ip4200/5200.
The answer is not NO, there are compatable carts for it, just you have
to pull your old chips and plop them on the compatable cartridges. You
can print with used chips, but you lose your meter.

Hi Martin
To change the chip you just take it from your cart, I used a penknife,
and stick it in place with double sided tape on the replacement cart.
The problem is you need to stick exactly in the right place and that the
carts I bought were a poor fit in that they did not click in place. My
ip4200 is in the loft, I bought an epson for the price of the Canon
carts. There is someone on e-bay selling carts from Germany for the
Canon. I did not try him. You should be able to buy for the Canon at
around £8.50 per cart for originals
Good luck (also UK)

Ok, you have the canon cartridges. Last year they were just basicly
tupperware.
Now they are tupperware and a chip which remembers how full the
tupperware is, and it also has a light on it which blinks when empty.

Without a chip, the printer will not print. No one other than canon
makes this chip presently. You can use an old chip, but this old chip
will likely register as being empty. You can print on empty.

While aftermarket tanks do exist, and aftermarket ink does exist, it's
hard to find and won't work unless you take the from a canon tank and
pop it on the replacement. You might as well manualy refill with bulk
ink.

Has anyone tried refilling the ip4200 when it is only half empty and
before the lights start blinking. Will this work .

Somewhat.... on a new tank which never reached "empty" you are able to
refill it and get the low ink warning when the ink reaches prism level,
but once the ink hits the prism the cartridge is well starts counting
down from low to empty. Refilling at this point does not restore the
level. Also, if you continue to refill before empty eventually the
printer will notice and assume the cartridge is empty.

This is at least what i've observed.

The cartridge will work but no matter whether you refill before it hits
low ink level warning or whatever it'll still eventually decide you've
been refilling and show you the "cartridge appears to be a non-Canon
type" warning followed by the "invalidate your warranty" warnings and
acceptance screens.

There's plenty of information on this process if you google for it but
the printer will continue to work so it's not all bad.

Yes, on the models i've met, this is how it works. You can refill
before you hit the prism, but once the ink drains from the reservoir,
it's officaly empty. It will eventually be officaly empty anyway from
what i've seen.

But there are a couple of people who claimed they could not refill, but
this information is unverified, and there is NO information on the new
models, for example, the ip4300.
