Canon i960: want black text, but get only gray

I use my new Canon i960 to print photos, but I also want to print some
black-and-white documents.

The problem is that the text and ruling lines come out gray, not black.

In the printer properties dialog box, I use "Print Advisor" and choose
"Fast-print all-black text." I'm using plain office paper. My test case is
Schedule B from TurboTax.

I know the printer is capable of black text, because the Windows 98 printer
test page comes out with black text. What settings do I use to make my
documents come out with black text, too?

Try setting print output to Standard or High quality. Then try again.

Your current settings ("Fast Text") maybe defaulting to draft mode.

"Fast print" uses less ink, and spaces the dots further
apart, and the effect is a gray line, even though the text
will look black enough for most purposes. This mode
intended to save ink, and for test printing, in which you
checking page layout, and proof reading - it's much easier
to proof read a printed page than a screen image for some
reason.

If you want black lines, you'll have to turn on a higher
quality of printing - it will be slower (of course) and
will use at least 2x as much ink (--> the cartridge won't
last as long.)

Thanks to all who made suggestions.

I followed them and got the desired result.
