Canon i850 questions

Hello,

I have a Canon i850 which is connected via LPT1 parallel to a Win98SE based
PC.

I have two questions:

1 When I print double sided, and there is an odd number of pages, the
blank page is placed on the back of page 1 instead of the last odd numbered
page.
Am I doing something wrong, or should I add an extra blank page in the file
so that there is always an even number?

2 When I switch the printer on, it goes through an initialisation period
when I assume that it is head cleaning. I then send the first document, and
it seems to do it all over again. After that it prints documents
immediately. Is this correct?

regards

Henry

1. Sorry, I do not know. Try the Help button in properties

2. The printer is under control of its own processor so the particular
cycles at start and print are, by definition, correct.

I think you're doing something wrong...the odd pages should be printed
first, then flip over the sheets and print the even pages. That way page
one is first, and on the back of the first sheet is page two.

It works perfectly with my i850 here using Word, Acrobat Reader, etc.

The printer will clean the heads whenever it determines it needs to do
so. If you print a large number of sheets, it will pause when needed to
ensure the heads are clean before continuing.

This is normal.

However, you can speed up the initial start-up process a bit by enabling
the "Auto Power" on/off features in the printer driver (under the
Maintenance tab). With it enabled, the printer will turn itself on when
you send a document to the printer.

In the same options, you can also set a timer to turn the printer off by
itself. This way you never need to touch the printer's power button,
it'll take care of itself.

Also make sure your printer is always able to power down before you
disconnect power, such as on a power bar. This will ensure it has a
chance to park the print head and keep it from drying out.

Yes, that I understand, but what puzzles me is why it should clean on switch
on, and then do it all over again without having printed any sheets at all
in the intervening 10 seconds.

I don't do enough printing to justify keeping it on all the time and using
power save (just a few sheets a week), but thanks for the info.

Ah, I think I know what you mean now...you're saying you cut the power
to the printer completely, like on a power strip? If so, then perhaps
it's doing a self diagnostic after being powered-up. It then goes
through a cleaning cycle before printing.

I leave my i850 connected to power at all times, but turned off when not
in use. I hear it do one cleaning cycle when it turns itself on, and
then it prints. I seem to recall it doing a lot more one time after the
power failed.

No, I have not disconnected power, just switched off and on by pressing the
left hand button.

I have mailed Canon to see what they think, but have not yet had a reply.

I don't think they know either, from their reply.

By the way, I have solved the double siding problem.
It was cause by having reversed order printing selected in MS Word, rather
than in the print driver.
This was selected for use with single sided printing, which it did
perfectly, but it upset the double sided!
