Canon i470-D problems

I have a Cannon i470-D a little over a year old that has been working good.

I bought a new Compaq computer and installed the printer on it. I tried
to print several times and got message printer not responding. I then
got a message head needs alignment. I tried and after several times of
getting printer not responding then it worked. Tried printing again and
same message, printer not responding. I then went to maintance and tried
printing a test page and it worked. Tried again to print a page and the
same old printer not responding. I have looked through owners manual and
can't find any help.
Any Ideas what I might do to get it to work?

Are you the front USB sockets, or the ones on the back? If you are using the ones on the front, you may need to switch to the ones on the back. Make sure that you first remove the "new hardware" entry on the taskbar for the printer on, first. XP machines handle, plug and play devices, differently then W9X/ME machines did/do.
