Canon 4200F problem? havent used for 1 week and then try email button- doesnt work, must unplug and

I recently purchased a Canon 4200F scanner. It seems to be working
fine. However, I have a question. There is no on/off button. I havent
used the scanner for over a week. I went to scan a documment- I simply
pressed the email button on the scanner and nothing happened. I pressed
it a few times nothing. Finally I unplugged and plugged the power in
and then hit the email button and it worked. Can someone explain this?
