Cannot write to USB drives -help needed

Hi, a sudden problem has occured on my system and would really appreciate any
help. I can no longer write to a USB drive after I connect it. The system
recognizes it, and I can read and copy files from the drive, but cannot put
new info on it (either through saving a new file in Word, Powerpoint, or just
copying through Windows). I have 3 USB ports and they all have the same
problem. I also have 2 drives, and the problem occurs on both, regardless of
which port it's in.

It is not the drives themselves, as I tested them on another system and they
work fine. It's not the usb ports per se on my PC either, as I was able to
download a pile of pictures from my digital camera with no problems.

This is quite bizzare, and started suddenly for no reason. 2 days ago things
worked fine. I'm using Windows XP on an Acer laptop. My Windows Office
version is 2003. Word and Powerpoint themselves still work and will allow
saving to my hard drive, but not the USB drive.

The errors are: either gives me a "check to ensure the door/disk is closed"
message, "Word cannot create this file. Ensure the disk you're saving to is
not damaged/full/write protected" message, or "Error Copying File: Cannot
Copy (filename). The directory or filename cannot be created".

If anyone has any ideas has to what's going on here, would greatly
appreciate your insight. Thanks.

Regards,

Brian

Check if you have this registry value

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies
WriteProtect reg_dword 1
