Cannot view hidden or system files in Windows Explorer

Can anyone tell me why I can't view hidden or system
files in Windows Explorer. When I chooses the option
"Show Hidden Files and Folders" and then apply nothing
happens and when I go back into "Folder Options"
something is changing it back to
"Do not show hidden files and folders".
Is there somewhere in the registry I can change this
setting or can someone tell me what possible softwhere is
stopping me from selecting this option.
I have ran a full scan with my Norton Virus software and
nothing was found, I also have Norton Personal firewall
installed.

Don't depend on Norton, exclusively. The setting in the registry is here:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Hidden

Set the dword value to 1

Once done, go to the Task Manager and end process on Explerer.exe. With the
Task Manager still open, go to File/New Task and type in: Explorer.exe

in the Tools - Folder Options there is a Restore Defaults button. have u pressed that? if that dont work then what i would suggest is to reinstall windows xp over yer present version!. simply boot yer computer with the XP setup cd in the cd drive and proceed like yer gonna do a proper install. at one stage before it actually seems like its gonna do a full install it checks for previous versions of windows and will find yer winxp. it will then ask if u wanna upgrade. do this. it will return the registry to what it should be for all windows components and also keep all the settings for of yer previously installed programs.

Thanks Kelly

This does work to a point, it lets me see all the hidden
files I'm after as it leaves both options
"Show Hidden Files and Folders" &
"Do not show hidden files and folders". blank but as soon
as I click in the radio button to select to show them and
then apply it immediatley goes back to dont show them and
they all dissapear, weird eh
At least I can get round the problem
Thanks again for everybodys help.

Most welcome and no, isn't weird, I just have to figure out what you set to
change it?

Are you using any third party tweakers, have you made any gpedit changes
<policies, etc>? Is this an admin profile, do you have Save Settings on
Exit set in the registry but being over ridden via a Tweaker upon boot?

What is listed in your policy keys via the registry? How does gpedit read
for those settings mentioned?

Thanks Kelly
