Cannot use CONVERT for RAW drives?

I'm on SP4 & tried to convert my Maxtor 30GB (with 17.7 MB free space) FAT32
slave file D: to NTFS from the command prompt using:

convert D: /FS:NTFS /V

I got the following error message:

"The type of file system is RAW. CONVERT is not available for RAW drives."

I cannot find any W2K help file that defines a 'raw' drive nor any helpful
Microsoft Knowledge Base article for the error message.

Please advise & enlighten.
