Cannot upgrade IE6 to IE7

Having some issues trying o upgrade IE 7 from IE6. I have downloaded the
install for 7 and have had not problems with the software before or after
this issue so I can determine its not corrupt.

IE acts like its going to install 7 however right before it starts it errors
out saying I have to reboot to allow changes to take affect. It says too
after the restart to click on a short cut link to use for more
troubleshooting. This is the link to the KB article:

Going through the article does not give me any help as everything they have
you check are not problems on my computer. One point in the article they
have you chekc the install log under the windows directory. My install log
is not named the same as gets referenced in the KB article. The one they say
to find is ie7.log however the one I find is ie7_main.log. There is also an
ie6.log too that has a little bit of information in it from today's install.

If it is helpfull to post them I will. Anything else I should try or look at?

Are you running WinXP SP2 or WinXP SP3?

Required reading IMHO before installing IE7:

Sandi's Installation Tips <= Steps #1-8, #10 & #11; take note of #12, then
STOP!

(ignore any references to Vista)

And I strongly recommend using
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx as the
installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update.

Tip: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run it.

Make *certain* that you check in at Windows Update immediately after
installing IE7 and install any critical updates offered. If Optional
Updates category offers Root Certificates update, I recommend installing it
to take full advantage of IE7's additional security.

This is an XP SP3 computer. Just rebuilt it. So is it a step of installing
SP3 first and then IE7? Meaning can I only install IE7 on SP2 computers then
upgrade them to SP3? I have other computers running both however it was
installing IE7 first then SP3.

We run Symantec Endpoint Protection 11 and have had no problems installing
IE7 on those computers

The copy I have was obtained from the direct download site (not going
through windows update) and just used it on another XP computer (SP2) with no
problems.

So I guess I am still kind of lost

Uninstalled XP SP3 and then re-ran the install for IE7. Everything worked
fine.

Seems kind of strange you cant install IE7 after SP3.

You *can* install IE7 after installing SP3 (if you do it right), but you
can't *uninstall* IE7 if it was installed before SP3 was installed without
first uninstalling SP3. Again, see

Recap:

• Install SP3 | Install IE7 | Uninstall IE7? Yes.

• Install IE7 | Install SP3 | Uninstall IE7? No, not without uninstall SP3
first.

*Your* apparent inability to install IE7 in WinXP SP3 /may/ have been due to
the fact that your Symantec software was running in the background when you
installed WinXP SP3...

....or the fact that the Symantec software was running when you attempted to
install IE7.

Yes, I understand the concepts in the post for IE7 in the link that you
provided. However the information it pertains to is not really applicable to
my situation as I could not even get IE7 to install on this computer.

Symantec Endpoint Protection was not an issue as it was still on this
trouble computer running fine when I reinstalled IE7 after uninstalling SP3.
Also I have installed IE7 on other computers in our organization with the
antivirus client running with no problems.

Only when I removed SP3 was I able to install IE7 and then reinstalled SP3.
I will test this theory on another comptuer I am rebuilding and try to
remember to report back.
