Cannot uninstall programs

Well, almost everything is working - I'm on the verge of switching from my
XP Pro laptop to my new Vista laptop - I think my security, email, home
network, etc. is OK thanks to people on these news groups. One final (I
hope) issue: My "add/remove programs" window does not have the little boxes
at the left edge of each program line. It used to. Where did they go? I
need them. I now have no way to uninstall programs. I'm the administrator
of my Vista Home Premium. Help, anyone? Thanks, Paul

There ain't no little boxes no more. Click on the name of the program you
want to modify or remove and it will start the Add/Remove Program Wizard or
the program's registered installer/uninstaller.

Whoa! The 2 programs I most recently installed have an "Installed On" date
(but, mysteriously, no "last Used On" date). When I highlight one of them,
the "Uninstall" option appears.

Programs that came with Vista ("NTI CD & DVD-Maker", for example) or that I
installed earlier (Microsoft Office XP Professional with FrontPage", for
example) do not have the "Installed On" date but do have a "Last Used On"
date. When I highlight them, the "Uninstall" choice disappears.

Some unrelated setting must have caused this change. I had to do quite a
bit to enable my Vista and all my old XP Pro computers to read and write
each other's files and share printers.

So, fortunately, the programs I can't Uninstall are programs I want and use
daily. And, probably going forward, new programs can be Uninstalled if I
prefer.

Something is broke, but if I can't fix it, I can still switch to my Vista
laptop. Good thing, because my old laptop is unreliable.
