I installed a fresh copy of XP Pro on an old (2002) HP laptop, from the same
upgrade CD that was originally installed on it. I've run all of the Windows
Updates. Now I have a strange symptom. When I click Start, then "turn off
computer", the small box that appears has "standby" dimmed out (not
available). So my choices are shut down or restart. How do I fix this?
TIA, Paul

Check your Device Manager if your video controller is not marked with red or
yellow exclamation mark. A greyed out Standby button is usually indicative of
a video driver problem. Reinstall or update your video driver and see if that
solves the problem.

Rey, you were right! A driver re-install and a re-boot, and the "standby"
is back. And another problem - my IE "rippled" when scrolling down now
scrolls smooth.
Thank you!

Which indicates that XP was using a generic driver that was unable to
exploit the acceleration features of the graphics processor.

Now my remaining problem is speed. The disk light flashes constantly when I
run something, so I think my 512kb memory is not enuf - I probably should
got to 1gb, the max this laptop will tolerate. Any other ideas. Once upon
a time this laptop ran fine with 512.

512M is generally considered adequate for Windows XP, but few would disagree
that 1G is better. A lot depends on what apps you run.
