Hello,
During April '04, I replaced my internal CD-RW drive on my Compaq with an HP
DVD-RW 420i drive. The drive has and does work fine ever since. the problem
is that since that time, I cannot shut down XP. I upgraded to Professional
from Home Edition, I have installed SP2, I have gone through every
conceivable support fix suggestion from Microsoft, I have gone through all of
the suggestions from the Ahuma.org site, and I still cannot shut down without
just holding the power button in until the CPU disconnects (which I am not
comfortable with for obvious reasons). After reviewing the Event Log, I may
have isolated the problem to one of two errors that I will paste below. I
have not had much luck in trying to decipher/react to the error messages. Any
help in resolving this is much appreciated.

Hi,

One's your network card, the other is a USB card reader driver. Why do you
suspect these? The error messages may be the result of your cutting the
power supply.

What I would *suggest* is that you first put the system in diagnostic mode,
then reboot. This is on the general tab of msconfig (click start/run, type
msconfig and click ok). If the shutdown sequence works in this mode, then
you have a software conflict. The solution will be to isolate which program
or process is causing the issue:

If not, then you likely have a hardware issue, and it may require
removing/replacing some components. I suspect that you will find that it is
not a hardware problem though, as it rarely is.
