CANNOT SET 16 BIT COLOR IN WIN XP

I cannot set the 16 bit colour to work without a pattern of vertical lines on my screen. Can you advise me of what I might do to achieve this.
My set up is as follows:

I have;
Windows XP pro
A Gigabyte Radeon 9800 Pro 128 Video card
A LLiama AS4431D 1280x1024 LCD Monitor-(using digital connection)
Pentium 4
1Gb RAM

Uninstall and reinstall to the latest drivers, does anything more than 16 bit
work? if not sounds like the video card is toast.

I have tried this and does not make any difference, everything works at 32 bit colour but nothing at 16 bit

Do you like dull color?
