Cannot Send Mail

Hello, I am using Windows Mail, my OS is Vista, and my ISP is Verizon Fios,
and yesterday, out of the blue I stopped being able to send mail.

I get this error message:
Account: 'Incoming.Yahoo.Verizon.net (1)', Server:
'Incoming.Yahoo.Verizon.net', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR popgate
unknown command', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error
Number: 0x800CCC18.

AND I get the box to enter my username and password, which just keeps
popping up despite my entering them correctly.
Please help.

Go to Tools menu>accounts>select your account>properties>server tab>enter
your correct PW & UN there>apply>OK

Remove any unsent messages from the Outbox.

Test the send/receive.

If it fails again and gives the login box again, click the Cancel button.
Then select the error message and copy/paste that error back here.

Try the following,
Go to Tools>Accounts>select your account>Properties>Servers tab and ensure
the box for "Log on using Secure Password Authentication." is not checked.

It's unchecked.....and I also disabled email scanning in Mcafee.....still
having the same problem.

Verizon does sometimes have problems. It have a problem yesterday afternoon
or evening; I am not sure when the problem occurred. Verizon definitely has
more problems than Road Runner for example.

FFRDA - your subject for this post reads cannot "SEND" mail, yet the error
you posted is in regards to "POP3" which is INCOMING mail - do you have them
set up backwards?

Make sure you are not confusing the setting "Log on using Secure
Password Authentication" with "My server requires authentication".
The latter must be checked and the former must be unchecked.
If those settings are good, the only remaining potential problem source
is your antivirus.

McAfee antivirus is among the top three troublemakers for Windows Mail.
The only way you can prove or disprove that McAfee is the culprit is to
uninstall it, followed by using their debris removal tool:
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507
If you decide to replace McAfee, we can recommend a free antivirus
program which is more compatible with Windows Mail:

Instead of switching to a different antivirus, another option is to upgrade
to Windows Live Mail (WLM), which is more resistant to the adverse effects
of overly intrusive antivirus products: http://download.live.com/wlmail

Even with WLM, you must disable email scanning in the antivirus,
for the reason explained here:
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm

Don't just assume your issue is identical to someone else's.
Do you get an error message when you try to send? If so,
right-click on your error message, copy, then paste it into a reply here.
We can't do much troubleshooting without the complete error message.
