Cannot send mail using either port 25 or 587

I don't understand why this has only recently been happening but I cannot
send mail using smtp in ol 2003.

I am trying to send using my Yahoo account but the send receive says that it
is sending messages that are not actually in the outbox, e.g (bottom rh
corner of screen sending 2 of 3 messages when there are no messages there to
send) then after a short while it says error send receive.

My ISP is BT and apparently they block port 25 so I changed the port
settings (as recommended by Yahoo) to port 587 but I still cannot send from
within outlook.

I have configured my e mail account to the letter of the pop 3 settings as
described in the Yahoo tutorial, I can receive but not send.

The only temporary solution that seems to work only for a short while is to
create a new profile, this uses the default port 25 but it only works for a
few days then stops sending.

If this helps

I am using Norton online security
I have recently installed Spamfighter

Please help if you can,

Probably undeliverable read receipts. See if this helps:

BT uses Yahoo, which means that they should allow authenticated connection
on port 25 just like AT&T does (they also use Yahoo for their mail servers).
Are you checking the box on the Outgoing Server tab of your account
properties that says "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication"?

thanks Brian,

No, it didnt work, My mail sends and receives in OE perfectly, with the same
settings as Outlook and on port 25 so why is this?
Outlook isn't corrupt or damaged and has been working fine for years so why
does OE work and not Outlook?

Also if there is a known problem with undeliverable read receipts why
doesn't Outlook have a way to deal with this, why do I have to use a third
party program to debug flaws in Outlook?

Do you get any error messages? If so, what is their exact text? If not,
what are the exact symptoms?

You'd have to ask Microsoft people.

Hi Again Brian,

I'm sorry but I forgot to mention that there are 3 undeliverable read
receipts when I use outlook spy but when I goto imagestore >>>getcontents, i
see the three rr's in the left hand pane but they will not delete, I get a
message saying Mapi_W_Partial completion

If I had this happen to me, I'd start with a new PST, make it my delivery
location, then transfer everything (except the Outbox contents) to the new
PST, removing the old PST when finished.
