When I click on an email link on a web page I get this message:
Could Not Perform This Operation Because the Default Mail Client Is Not
Properly Installed.
This is a new computer with Vista installed
Any thoughts?

To correct this problem, go to Default Programs, which you
can reach either from the Start menu or the Control Panel,
then click the first item: "Set your default programs."
After a few seconds a list of programs comes up.
Click on Windows Mail. If all is well, it will respond
"This program has all its defaults."
If it reports less than all (3) of its defaults, fix it by selecting
the option indicated by the first green arrow.

Thank's guys, that did the trick

Hi Gary

I did this and only 2 defaults set so set 3rd one as advised but did not fix
the problem. I also get message "navigation to the website was cancelled" and
about 60 pages that I have to x out of. Its a brand new computer from a
computer store with Vista. I paid a techie to install it $260. Is this an
issue with Vista itself or did he forget to do something? He is hopefully
coming back today but I don't know if I should pay him the $100 an hour or
not. Thanks (e-mail address removed)

Thanks for your time Gary. I've printed this out for techie as I'm too
scared to try this one! Brenda53

Gary, I replied to this message and it didn't go through so you'll see
another reply from me that starts with "by the way...". This reply is
actually what I wanted you to get first.
I, too, had many windows opening when I clicked a "mailto:" address,
however, that has stopped. Now there is no email window opening when I click
a mailto: address and I get a window that pops up and asks for permission to
run the program: Windows Host Process (Rundll32). I went ahead and did the
tutorial/fix that you recommended to fix the multiple window problem,
thinking it might fix things, but it didn't . Before I followed the
tutorial/fix, in the regedit window under Name, Type and Data, I had
something different than what the tutorial said I should have. The line with
URL Protocol is blank under Data, the way it says it should be, however, the
line above it that says FriendlyTypeName under Data said @ieframe.dll-910, so
I changed it to what the tutorial said it should be. It didn't fix the
problem. Are you going to tell me I have to re-install Windows? <grin>

Yes, Default Programs should show Windows Mail without the
"(News)" also. To have it added to the list, follow these instructions:

I have a similar problem. In IE& the send page by link is there but is grey
and nil happens when I click it. I have done all this deafult stuff re
windows mail but still it does not work.

I am not sure if this is related but I have the same problem re MS office.
I want ot use office 2003 and it is installed. However when I am in a
program and click on 'fiel' there is no 'send to' button and i have tosabve
the page and send from within windows mail. Any suggetsions?

I am having a similar problem as others on this thread. I have never been
able to successfully send an e-mail from a link on a webpage or within an
e-mail (although I can write and send an e-mail in Windows Mail). I used to
have the multiple pages opening in addition to the error message, but my
computer must have downloaded an update that fixed that as I no longer get
the multiple windows. But I still get the error message:
"Could not perform this operation because the default mail client is not
properly installed".

As I said, I have verified that Windows Mail is my default client (it has
all its defaults). I am using gmail that is downloaded into Windows Mail.
Could this have anything to do with it?
