Cannot send by clicking Send box in an email

After opening a new message in Outlook (2002 SP3), addressing recipients,
typing the message, Etc. When I click send in the new message header it goes
to the Outbox and starts to rot! It will not actually send until I click on
"Send/Receive" in the toolbar. I have not found any fix for this. Can anyone
help me out???
 
Have you set up automatic send/receive in Tools, options. mail setup,
send/receive button?
 
Somehow, I suspect my grandchild, checked "offline" under the file menu.
Clearing the check was the remedy.
