cannot see or access CD-ROM drive

Ann Adamson

I have a system running XPE with minlogon and command shell.
I think I have all the components I need to access the CD Rom drive, but the
drive does not appear to
be there. If I run diskpart and do a 'list volume' the CD drive does not
appear in the list.

Yes, I have:
CD-ROM Drive
CDFS
Primary IDE Channel
Secondary IDE Channel
PnP (User Mode)
Removable Storage Service
..
..
..
etc.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Ann Adamson

Ann,

First of all, diskpart allows you to manage fixed (non-removable) disks and
volumes.
Second, check your FBALog.txt - any errors there?

Also, make sure you've got "Class Installer - DVD/CD-ROM drives" and
"CoDevice Installer - DVD/CD-ROM drives" component included.

Hi Ann,

As Konstantin said check log files.
Or use devcon.exe or device manager to see visually what is wrong.

Slobodan

Yes. I can see it in BIOS and access it from XP Pro booted on the same box.

I do have those components, and my CD drive does show up as a volume in
diskpart when booted on XP Pro. I will double check the log files today.

Hi Ann,

If you have El-torito support and El-torito CD please remove it from XPe build.

Best regards,
Slobodan

Where do I find devcon.exe?

I also cannot see USB hard drives, even though I appear to have all the
necessary components.

Disk Drive
Removable Storage Service (?)
USB Root Hub
USB Mass Storage Device

Hi Ann,

It is very hard to say what can be the problem without setupapi.log or more info from your side.

By the way what is the connection between this problem and CD problem?

You are not using USB CD, are you?

Best regards,
Slobodan

Well I know that Diskpart (list disk) I see all my removable drives listed,
just cannot do anything with them ie delete, clean etc. But I definitely can
see them.

Cheers

Interesting.. It does not list a CD-ROM for me. And I am not surprised by that as it follows the documentation.

Here is the piece from http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=300415:
"list disk

Use the list disk command to obtain summary information about each disk in the computer. The disk with the asterisk (*) has the
current focus. Only fixed disks (for example, integrated device electronics [IDE] or small computer system interface [SCSI]) or
removable disk (for example, 1394 or USB) are listed. The removable drives are not displayed."

Please note the last sentence.

You can, however, see the CD-ROM as volume (list volume) and even change its name.

That is weird as I most certainly see my removable Microdrive, when I type
in list disk, it is even called removable in the table that appears. Oh
well, nothing surprises me anymore

Paul,

Microdrive? This falls in to a different device class (Class Installer: hdc) than CD-ROM.
I guess only disk class devices are seen by "list disk" command.

There definitely seems to be a problem with the CD. As I said, it works
just fine on a regular XP Pro boot on the same machine.

No, just a regular USB Hard disk. There is no connection with the CD
problem, except that they both showed up at the same time.

Is there something I have to manually run on my minlogon/cmd shell OS in
order to scan for new devices?
I don't have Device Manager or the Add Hardware Control Panel or anything
like that added, since I don't have an Explorer shell.
