I have a LAN consisting of one desktop, connected internet via dsl modem, and
one laptop, connected via wireless router. I can see the laptop in the
network on both computers, but cannot see the desktop. I have run the
network wizard on both. I cannot start the computer browser on the on the
desktop; i have disabled on the laptop. When I try to start on the desktop I
get message: "could not start the computer browser service on local
computer". Error 1068: The dependency services or group failed to start.

Steve,

The Computer Browser service depends upon the Server and Workstation services.

Am I correct that computer browser must be started on the desktop in order
for it to be seen in the network? I can see the laptop from both the laptop
and the desktop but cannot see the desktop from either. Computer browser is
diabled on the laptop. The workstation is started but the server cannot be
started. I assume that is correct? Many Thanks for your response!

Steve,

The Computer Browser service has to be running on at least one computer on the
LAN. With 2 computers, it makes the most sense to run it on just one - and it
doesn't matter which one, as long as neither computer depends upon seeing ITS
OWN shares in Network Neighborhood. Please read my article!

Thanks Chuck. I did read both articles. I have downloaded browstat and have
read and re-read articles associated with problems in running it. However, I
cannot get it to run; if I attempt to run from command prompt I get the error
"browstat not recognized as an internal or external command . .". If I go to
the utility and try to open it opens opens and closes too quick to read
anything. I have read the suggeted articles on both situations and think I
am following the suggestions to the letter. Any furtther suggestions would
be appreciated.

Steve,

What folder did you copy browstat.exe into?

I created a new folder entitled Utility on the C drive. The file, support
tools includes the download. I added utility to the path as suggested.
Neither the browser nor the server service will start. I use this PC for vpn
connection as well, but am not connected when trying anything associated with
this home workgroup.n Thanks again for your assistance. I am away from this
PC often so I don't always make a response in a timely manner.

Steve,

Well, browstat should run, at least without giving "browstat not recognized as
an internal or external command . .", if the Path is right. Type
"path >c:\path.txt"
"notepad c:\path.txt"
(less the "") into a command window. Then copy and paste from Notepad into your
next post.

But we will have to figure out why the server service isn't running. Do you
have the right network components loaded?

Never mind, I see the problem here. You downloaded the Support Tools from
Microsoft. When you do that, you have to run from the ST Shell.

Try again - download JUST browstat.exe from Dynawell or Stanford, and copy
browstat.exe (just that) into C:\Utility. Then, assuming Path includes
";C:\Utility", run browstat as "browstat status".

Thanks Chuck, that worked. Here is the response: Status for domain MSHOME
on transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{BB16F6C4-30D8-46F1-A3
5D-157D2C1216CD}
Browsing is NOT active on domain.
Master name cannot be determined from GetAdapterStatus.
I beleive I have all the correct network components running. Server is not
running and will not start. Workstation is running. thanks again for your
help.

Keep trying, Steve. Browstat and ipconfig are most useful when they can be
compared between computers. Either YOU need to compare them, or I do.

One of the most common causes of this problem would be a misconfigured or
overlooked personal firewall, but there are other possibilities too. What
antivirus products do you use? Go thru this entire article, and follow the
links!

Make sure ALL necessary components and services are running! This includes WF /
ICS or ICS / ICF.

Chuck, I think my problems may begin with the server not running on the
desktop. When I try to start it, I get this message: Configuration Manager:
The specified device instance handle does nto correspond to a present device.
When I look in computer management I see that there is a warning event for
server. The type is Warning, event ID: 2508/ The description is: The
server service was unable to load the server driver. There is no help that I
can find at Microsoft for that event. The path to execute
is:C:\WINNT\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs I cannot seem to get anywhere
since I cannot start the browser service as long as the server is not
running. Suggestions? Thanks again

Steve,

Here's an article on Event ID: 2508 - it says Windows NT, but maybe you can find
some useful clue.

chuck, that file listed in also in service pac 2 for XP, I beleive. Would
you suggest that I download and reinstall service pac 2? Browstat indicates
that browsing in active on laptop and looks ok. I can see laptop on laptop
and desktop, but cannot see desktop on either. Browstat of course browsing
inactive on desktop. I assume that unless and until I am able to get server
service started that I will remain stuck here? I appreciate all your help
and guidance. I have pretty much looked this system over top to bottom and
cannot see why server will not start.
