Cannot see either WIN98 or XPPro computer in Workgroup

I have a XPro computer with two NIC cards. The first NIC card is connected
to a DSL modem and connects to the internet with no problem. The second NIC
card is for my Intranet and connects to a WIN98 computer and a legacy print
server. The problem is that neither the NIC card on the WIN98 machine or
the 2nd NIC card on the XPPro receives packets and hence I am unable to
share files. They are both connected to a Linksys 5-Port Workgroup Switch
by straight cat 5 cables. I am NOT using the uplink port. I've verified
that they are both members of the same workgroup (MSHOME), they both have
the proper NIC drivers and network drivers installed. The IP address for
both are fixed. File sharing is active. I've run "netsetup" on both
computers. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

You should have modem>uplink port on switch>each computer hooked to the
switch. The second NIC isn't needed.
