cannot "saveas" after home vista upgrade

Did 4 installs and only had this problem on the one computer that had "xp
home". The other 3 vista premium upgrades all work ok. Googled around and
cannot find anything related.

Symptom: "saveas" does not work on the following programs ... wordpad,
notepad, mspaint, iexplorer (so far, maybe more)

Right click on web page, any image and then select "saveas" closes IE7
instantly. No error shows up in event viewer. Same for MSPAINT.

Notepad and Wordpad give "app failure" and one can report the problem to
microsoft.

Save works. If we edit and existing file or (for example) from the CMD
prompt run "notepad c:\test.txt" then one can create test.txt and then save
stuff into it. Just cant do a "Save As".

I have never seen this before and have worked on 100's of windows systems
going back to "Windows 1.0"

Microsoft word, excel etc, "office 2003" the SAVEAS WORKS OK. I did notice
that office 2003 has a different saveas gadget than the gadget that notepad,
wordpad, IE brings up. Maybe that is why those apps worked and the builting
vista ones failed.

System: D865perl, Home Vista 32 (XP HOME ORIGINAL)

On another d865perl, original XP-Pro, this problem does not occur. Only on
the system that was a true "home". It would appear there is some software
left over from "xp home" that is causing the problem. I assume we could do
a clean install since that worked on the other d865perl system. We would
loose a lot of stuff and would have to re-install office 2003 and a bunch of
other stuff. A real bummer. Surely there is some repair we can to try to
salvage this upgrade. This has occured since the first day we upgraded Xp
Home -> Vista. Maybe we should call microsoft support?

Heard from microsoft within 12 hours and tried all their suggestions: Safe
mode, diagnostic only (no services running) we even re-installed the
upgrade. We did not do a clean install as we are still trying to salvage
all the programs that were installed under XP. We are waiting to see what
else they will suggest.

Still have the same problem: "saveas" in explorer and mspaint closes both
app's instantly, no event error logged on the close. "saveas" in notepad or
wordpad generate an app error which can be report to microsoft and does show
up in the log.

I do not see a "repair install" like XP had. If I boot the cd the options
are to install (which abort if I put in the key as the install key is for a
home upgrade). The other option leads to memory test, etc. We ran that
memory test, did the startup repair, etc. While in the command diagnostic
(of the vista boot cd) I can actually bring up notepad and it properly does
a "saveas" so the files on the vista CD are not corrupted. McAfee 8.5 with
SP1 is certified for vista and it does not show a virus nor did this problem
occure before we installed vista.

We have another D865perl system and it does not have this behavior, but it
was an upgrade from XP PRO -> Vista Home and the install was clean unlike
the home upgrade.
