Cannot Save Web Pictures in Other Formats than Bitmap

I am a new user of Windows XP. usually, I am able to save
web pictures as a jpg file but today, I just can't save
except for bitmap format, which takes lots of space.
How do I revert back to being able to save as jpg files?
is this because my Internet Explorer is corrupted or,
worse, my Windows XP has been corrupted?
Please help!

In IE click Tools, Internet Options, click the General tab, then delete your
temporary internet files.
