Cannot save changes in Word 2003

Out of the blue, I cannot save any Word files. The menu save (button or file
menu) has no obvious effect. Closing the document generates the close dialog
box but choosing save or save as doesn't do anything - dialog box just
disappears. Have to cancel to exit any open doc without any save. Excel and
Notepad save okay. Did detect and repair with no effect. Did Office 2003 SP1
update, no effect. Docs are not protected or read only. No error messages are
displayed.

Does anyone have any idea. I have over 10 years experience with Word and
never saw anything like this before.

This could be the result of a virus or a poorly written add-in. For a start,
go to Tools | Macro | Macros and see if there are any *macros* (not commands
under All Commands) named FileSave or FileSaveAs. If so, these are
intercepting the built-in commands. Change the "Macros in" setting to
isolate them to a specific template; if this is an add-in, unload it, and if
it's in the Startup folder, remove it from there before you start Word
again.

Is your normal.dot not perhaps corrupt. Search for normal.dot on your pc and
copy to another place. Then delete your original normal.dot. As word cannot
find a normal.dot it will create a new one (but please backup your original
normal.dot). See if the error disappears when creating a new normal.dot. If
this solves the problem your old normal.dot is corrupt and you will have to
restore a workable version from a previous backup or copy your macros,
toolbars, etc. to this new normal.dot.

Well, there were no viruses or unusual macros. I changed normal.dot to
normal.bak and let Word create a new normal.dot and it seems to have resolved
the problem. Thanks.
