Cannot run defrag

When trying to defrag message states CHKDSK or CHKDSK/f needs to run at
bootup. This never happens. I do not know how to either make it work or how
to stop the command. This has been going on for at least two weeks. Have
tried system restore and it still says it is scheduled to run at bootup

hello nascar2428,

obviously, you ran into some
kind of difficulty and when you
tried a defrag and chkdsk, they
both failed on you.

what you should do is to boot up
with a cd instead of the harddrive.

use your winxp setup cd and get
to your c prompt via recovery console

or

boot with an emergency boot cd to get
to your c prompt.

at the c prompt run chkdsk c: /f

if it runs successfully, then you
should have no problem when you reboot
again by typing exit at the c prompt.

incidentally, defrag requires sufficient
resources to run, so you might want to
run defrag via safemode
