Cannot run chkdsk

if i try to run chkdsk /f or chkdsk /r the system says;

could not get direct access to the drive


then the system continues to start up.


why has this happened and how can i get chkdsk /f /r to run

Continues to start-up ?? When do you type the text ?
Go to run,type:cmd At the curser type:CHKDSK C: /R
or /F

mmm.... yes, that's what i have done. then you have to restart before chkdsk
will run, so as the system restarts it would normally enter chkdsk but it
doesn't, it displays the previous message and continues to normal start up.
