cannot retrieve e-mailed photos

i have windows XP. i downloaded the file i was sent.
when i try to open it, it says: the drive or network
connection that the shortcut (filename) refers to is
unavailable. make sure that the disk is properly inserted
or the network resource is available, and then try again.
what does this mean? can you help me please?

Sounds like you simply created a shortcut to the
file instead of actually copying it to your hard drive.
