Hey Folks,
A while ago i had backed up some data on a CD-RW using
windows backup utility & then deleted that data to free
up my HD space. Now when i insert that CD it ask for
a .bfk(or bkf) file which it might have produced when i
initially created the backup. It seems its not there
either I or my sister deleted that file. Is there any way
i can access that data on my CD-RW??? How can i do that?
Please help i badly nee that data.
thanks

Well a CD-rw is not a backup device as far as XP is
concerned so I doubt that the file was ever saved there.
If you copied it to a folder and then burned it, then look
on the cd and move it to your desktop and then restore it
from there.

As mentioned XP's Backup program can not backup directly to a CD-R/W unless
you use a work-around like one here
http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/saving_files_to_cd.htm Did you do any of
those things? If not then try doing a search on your hard drive for *.BKF to
see if you can locate it.

If your CD-R/W was formatted as UDF using a program like Direct CD or InCD
it is possible that the disk is damaged. You might be able to locate the
data with ISOBuster http://www.smart-projects.net/ or CD DataRescue
http://www.naltech.com/ However you need to register those apps to retrieve
data off a damaged disk

If you haven't used your computer much since you deleted the data you might
be able to retrieve some or all of it with an undelete program like
Restoration http://hccweb1.bai.ne.jp/~hcj58401/

It's too late now but your problem illustrates what can happen using a
backup program, especially one that uses compression to get more data in the
same space. The problem is you also need that backup program to uncompress
and recover what you've backed up. That's why I choose to simply burn the
data to be backed up directly to my CD (without a backup program). That way
the information is available to be recovered on any PC without the backup
program.

To avoid multiple CDs for backup I bought a USB 2.0 external 40GB hard drive
for just under $100. Works like a champ and runs as fast as an internal
hard drive. I simply click and drag whatever I want to back up from my C:
drive to my USB drive. I really helped when I bought my new PC last
January. I simply copied everything from my old hard drive to the USB
drive. Then I plugged the USB drive into my new computer and copied
whatever I wanted. Of course most actual programs had to be installed but I
installed over the programs I had copied from my USB drive simply to
establish the connections, etc necessary for an installed program.

Thanks you all,
Well, all i did was start windows backup software and
showed it where to store the data. I did not use Direct
CD or any other software to format it. Although i might
have maually formated the dics (right clik Format) But
I'll try the options provide here by you all. And yeah i
have used my PC a little too well after i backedup my
data...
Thanks once again
DOc
