Cannot resolve dns error....

Hi,

I have had this dns error related problem for around a month now and just
cannot seem to resolve it:

Our internet connection worked fine until we had to replace out router/modem
and used the free adsl modem provided by Tiscali in the interim. After
succesfully connecting to the internet using this modem we where hit witht
the most aggresive barrage of adware and spyware I have ever seen. Message
after message popped up in the 20 mins that we where able to use the
connection; saying things like "Connect to "blahblah.com" to resolve terminal
errors on your system!!!". I kept closing these windows but the system
started to become unstable and after about only 20 mins of using the
connection we started recieving the unable to connect page. The address that
comes up is res://C\\WINNT\system32\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm.

Having tried to resolve the matter myself through Tiscali, and also Belkin
supprt, and doing my own research I have become familiar with dns erros and
their meaning, I have flushed out the dns, tried to use the Firefox browser
instead, checked the settings of wireless computers on the now restored
wireless network to which this PC is LAN connected that are able to connect
in order to use the same settings. My knowledge is limited in this area but I
do not normally have too much problems resolving problems on these PCs - can
anyone advise how I can go about resolving this error.

I am not sure wether it is a virus caused by the aggresive adware, or if it
is jsut a dns error that can easily be resolved by looking at the dns. I have
also tried to download and reinstall ie. 6 but am faced with the catch 22 of
not being able to download it on the PC in question(!) and on other PCs not
being able to because Microsoft says that there is already a more up to date
version on the PC being used and I cannot download the software!

Running Windows 2000 NT proffessional
With iinternet explorer version 5 (I think it is version 5 at least!)

Any direction would be very greatfully recieved,

Best Regards

This was answered in another newsgroup.

If you must post identical messages in more than one newsgroup please
crosspost, i.e. please place all of the newsgroups in the Newsgroup field of
one message, separated by commas. That way when someone reads the message
in one newsgroup it will be marked as read in all of them. In addition, an
answer posted in one newsgroup will generally show up in all of them.

This is usually not necessary since most of those who answer posts read
more than one newsgroup.
