Cannot resize shape using sizing handles

Laura

If I insert a smart art shape or text box I cannot resize it using the sizing
handles. If I use the sizing handles the entire shape shrinks to the size of
one line of text. The only way to re-size is to open the size and position
menu and guess at the proportions. This happens to my co-workers as well (we
have personal computers with Vista, so all versions were bought and installed
separately). I cannot convey how much time and frustration this adds to the
simple task of developing PPT presentations. I will be MOST grateful if
anyone has a solution.

Hi Laura,

textboxes cannot be resized by the handles - their size depends on the text
that is written in the textbox. The more text the bigger the box.

You can use a rectangle from the autoshapes. They can be resized as you want
to and you can also write text inside.

Actually, the problem also occurs with all of the autoshapes - rectangles,
circles...everything. Same with my co-workers. Any ideas? Thanks!

Does this only occur when the shape has text in it?

If so, right click, choose AutoFormat
In the Text Box area, make sure that AutoFit isn't chosen.

The exact location and wording is different from one version to the next so I'm
being a bit vague here; still, that should get you going.

Unfortunately, it happens in blank shapes. I thought that maybe it was acting as if I had text in it, so I went ahead and turned off autofit, but it did not solve the problem. Mysterious, huh?
