Cannot reinstall XP

My PC crashed with the error message
"missing...windows\system32\config\system". Tried to repair it using the
install disk and repair wizard but got the same error message. As I needed
the data on my hard drive urgently, I took out the drive and copied the
files onto another PC's hard drive, I then reinstalled it into my PC. I
started a new install of XP and when asked, reformatted the hard drive so as
to eliminate any corrupt files. When the PC rebooted having copied across
the setup files, I got the original error message! I tried again, removing
any extraneous hardware, USB connections, etc; same message .... the
knowledge base answer 307545 isn't much help, as I cannot install anything
onto the hard drive. Any ideas anyone?

Boot to xp cd,recovery, press enter key for password, then type:DiskPart In
DiskPart,delete all partitions,then create one,then press Esc key,then
type:EXIT
Reboot to xp cd,select install xp,let it format and install. If this
fails,download
the DOS hard drive utility from the mfg to a MS-DOS formatted floppy, run the
utility to chk youre drive for coruption,if found replace or warranty. If
bad sectors
exist,in recovery type:CHKDSK C: /R The /R tries to repair the sectors.

Thank you for your reply. I tried using recovery, but I couldn't get it to
work. I managed to get a utility disk for my hard drive, and used it to
check my hard drive. A full check revealed no problems, so I carried out a
full reformatting of the drive and tried reinstalling Windows. Unfortunately
I got the same error message, so I think it must be some other hardware
problem or possibly a BIOS problem?
