I'm using XP (SP2) and I have WMP 9. When I try to record a brief .wav from
a track on a CD that's playing, it acts like its being recorded, but I get
nothing when I try to play back the results. What's wrong? Yes I'm new at
this.

Have you tried upgrading to WMP 10?

No, it doesn't help. It seems like maybe it only wants to record from a
microphone, the Help function says you need one, but another place in Help it
says you just need an Audio Input Device, defined as a mic or a CD-player for
examples. Is there a way to do it in Media Player instead of just using
Sound Recorder? I only want about 5 seconds' worth of the song.

Right click on the little speaker down in the task bar and left click on it
.. Then make sure something isn't muted.

Nope; it still does not help. The Sound Recorder appears to run, but no
sound is recorded.

A few comments : re-install your sound card drivers.

Have you actually chosen CD to record from ?

Upgrading from WMP9 to 10 will have absolutely no effect if you can't solve
the WM9 problem.

Also on playback make sure nothing is muted (except microphone).

Cheers,

It doesn't help. I have come to the conclusion that Sound Recorder will only
work from a microphone and will not record any clips from a CD. The help
functions for XP and for Sound Recorder itself are contradictory on this.
Microsoft ought to fix that.
