Cannot read D drive

I recently lost me secondary harddrive, or at least it
looks like I've lost the file system on it.

When I go to MyComputer, I see my D drive (fixed
harddrive), however when I attempt to open it, or view it
with explorer I receive the message:
the file or directory is corrupted and unreadable
I've even tried accessing the drive from a boot disk, but
I receieve the same error.

I would like to exhaust all options before reformatting
the thing.

Any ideas?

There is a program called File Scavenger that is fairly
expensive since you can only use it on one computer that
will recover files on a NTFS formatted drive. It doesn't
work on FAT32. If files are there it should get them.
