I recently was forced to re-install XP Home Edition after
a virus attack. Install was apparently successful. Arrived
at Welcome screen where my Login name and icon appear.
Clicking on my login, the system says it is loading my
personal preferences as normal. After 2-3 seconds the
following error dialog box appears. : "A problem has
prevented Windows from accurately checking the status of
the license for this computer. To proceed, your copy of
Windows must be activated with Microsoft. Do you want to
activate Windows now?"
If I choose NO...the system closes my network connection
and returns me to the login. If I choose YES...the system
closes my network connection and returns me to the login.
No difference. I ended up on the phone with Microsoft
support (in New Delhi, India), for 3 hours as we renamed
various wpa files, deleted wpa files, made registry
changes, altered the oobe file, etc. After NUMEROUS start
ups in safe mode and rebooting to try ONE MORE TIME...The
error message still persists. My problem was kicked
upstairs to their senior analysts who are supposed to call
me sometime in the next 2-3 days to continue the battle.
Has anyone else been down this road???
The OS is installed on an older HP desktop running a PIII
500 Mhz processor. This system operated flawlessly with XP
Home edition til my virus attack. The virus was detected
and destroyed by McAfee. Apparently there are residual
repurcussions with which I am left to deal. Any ideas?
