cannot print from most apps

I have a usb-attached Xerox Workcentre 390 hooked to a brand new Dell
4600. I cannot print anything from (factory-installed) Word (part of the
Works package). Most other Works apps don't work either, but the
spreadsheet does! So do notepad, wordpad, and even MS Paint. But the
complex apps do not (including Lotus WordPro). I cannot print a paqe
from IE6. I thought that perhaps the simpler apps bypassed the spooler,
but am not sure.

There are no errors reported. Nothing in the System or Application logs.
The spooler service is running.

I have re-installed the drivers with no success. These are fresh from
the Xerox website. The SAME drivers and same printer worked just fine on
an IBM laptop with all apps.

If I look in \windows\system32\spool, there are no spool files. I tried
to printer to skip the spooler altogether but that made no difference.
One time, printing from Word, I did find a .spl file, but it was of zero
length.

I don't know where to look now.

TIA

btw, I am 'nobody' - I posted from a different machine. I found the
problem. Since I could print tiny files but not larger ones, I began to
wonder if there was a communications problem. There was. When I
connected the printer to the paralell port instead of via USB it worked
perfectly. I don't understand why there was no indication of an error
from the driver or else I just don't know where to find a log if there
is one...
