cannot play any music

I have windows XP installed on a toshiba laptop. recently I found the media
player not working anymore-- it cannot play any music, mp3 or music CD. I
have reinstalled the medial player but it still does not work. Please help.
The error message is related to file type or codec missing, but I am not
sure this is the case because I am not trying to open some special files.
