Why am I not able to get Windows Mail. It worked earlier today and has worked
fine for 3 months.Earlier today it wouldn't send forward mail out and now all
I get is a black box. Nothing else except for Incoming mail at top left
corner. I tried turning off the anti-virus for the email but nothing. It is
also taking forever to get anywhere that has Microsoft in the address. What
is going on ? If the mail has worked for 3 months why would the anti-virus
bother it now? Sounds like crock to me. It's getting really old having to
change this, remove that, delete, this, add that. I just want my mail back and I
don't want to have to change something every week.

I have experienced similar problems running Vista Home Premium. It only happens to me when I click to open a new window with e-mail or to respond. It does not happen all the time, but when it does, the only thing that shows is in the upper right corner saying e-mail. I have found that you can click on the black screen in various locations and actually hit what should be there--ie contacts junk mail box etc. But the only way to get out of it and make it work is to restart my computer. Any help with this issue would be great.

Mine has worked fine for about a month. I am running McAffee antivirus from the beginning.

Your problem is caused by McAfee.
Windows Mail is not compatible with most McAfee
or Norton security programs. Those will need to be
uninstalled, not just disabled.

After uninstalling your non-compatible antivirus, download
and install a more compatible antivirus like the free Avast:

Even compatible antivirus programs will need to have their
email scanning option turned off. For more on this topic see

I have this problem, only sometimes, too. I just bought this computer and it
came with the McAfee on it, so why would they do that if it doesn't work, and
why does it only do it sometimes. It is a terrible problem, have to restart
to get rid of it. Vista on the whole does not impress me too much, this
computer came with it so guess I am stuck. Has anyone figured out what we
should do to fix it? If I turn off the e-mail scanner thing will it still
ckeck for virus....how would that work? Thanks.

Did you read the explanation at the second link I gave?

Since you have McAfee, disabling it is not sufficient. You have to
uninstall it completely.

The AV companies like McAfee and Symantec (Norton) pay (bribe) the
computer sellers to install a trial copy of their antivirus. This is done in
the hopes that you will buy the full version when the trial runs out.
The incompatibility problem is not widely known outside of this cadre
of Windows Mail experts.

Someone else gave me this tip on this form

Instead of re=booting, hit Ctrl-shift- esc to bring up the Task Manager,
highlight Winmail.exe and click on End process.

Then re-open Winmail, and all will be fine for a while.
