Cannot open this file

When surfing the web suddenly my mouse pointer refused to move (it's a
wireless version) I rebooted and now windows will only open windows files
such as My Computer etc. When i try to open any other file such as word,
system restore or any other program i get the error message "Windows cannot
open this file. To open this file windows needs to know what program created
it. Windows can go online or you can select fronm a list" There is then a
wireless button to select the web or the list. I cannot us the web option as
my internet connection has the same error message and when i try to select
from a list, none of the programs with the problem are listed.

Any help please

Hi Eddy,

At startup (or restart), hit F8 as soon as the initial POST ends as WinXP
begins to load to get the boot menu. Choose safe mode with command prompt.
Then, after loggin on, run C:\Windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe to load
the system resotre application - this should be able to do it and minimize
interference from whatever has buggered the system.

Hi Rick,

My PC has the same errors and tried your method to do System restore, but
still same error "windows cannot find the file" and none of my programs are
running.

Appreciate your help in this.

Hi,

Cannot open or cannot find? The first (which is part of OP's problem)
indicates some interference or corruption. The latter (which you quoted)
indicates the file is missing or the path is not correct (in which case you
might want to try %windir%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe).

Hi Rick,

Tried doing system restore again but with no luck.
To me it seems some kind of virus/spyware issue, reason being, after 2nd
reboot just before log in prompt appears i see a window with just ok button
and some ascii character on top.
Please advice.Thx for all your help in advance.

Use the steps above to isolate what's doing that.
