Cannot open Outlook Express attachments

I am using Outlook Express 6. I am unable to open attachments.
When I place the cursor on the paperclip a box appears reading: This message
contains attachments.
When I right click on paperclip the attachment box and save the attachments
box appears...but you can do nothing with them.
ALSO: received an email from a friend that HAD a BEAUTIFUL "inline text"
attachment (also has paperclip). I say HAD because when I went back to
reopen the email it was gone! When I double clicked to open email there was
this message above the "email from" info:
(paperclip in gray circle) OE removed access to the following unsafe
attachments in your file.
I've searched and searched trying to find out why I'm having the problem
with the attachments. Your help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!

Didn't search too far:

Tools>Options>Security. Uncheck: "Do not allow
attachments................."

And please see these articles about virus protection in OE 6:

If you're running XP/SP2 also see this:

Dear Bruce: Thanks for the RAPID info!! But was it neccessary to make me
sound like an idiot by starting out "Didn't search too far"? Unfortunately
all of us aren't a computer wiz, that's what the "Discussions in Windows XP
Help and Support" are for. But again I thank you for taking the time and
helping me out.

My appologies. I did not mean to make you out as an idiot. I was glad
to help. But after seeing this hundreds of times in the last year, one
tends to get frustrated when the answer is in Start>Help & Support.

Again, I did not intend to demean you.

Dear Bruce, thank you for your kind response. I can understand your
frustration. Before I became ill, I would have been able to figure it out.
I managed the computer system for my employer from 1980-1995. It's
frustrating for me to not be able to mentally do the things I used to be able
to. I did try the Start>Help & Support, and I believe it brought me here.
But anyway, thank you for being so helpful. I did change the setting in
Tools>Options>Security as you told me to do. But I'm confused about this:
When I right click on the paperclip then click on the attachment (not: save
attachments...) it opens the "Save Attachment As" box. I'm about ready to
get the BIG HAMMER out!!! LOL Thanks again Bruce, have a wonderful day. Deb
