Cannot open Microsoft Access 2000 database file

Michele

We have an Access database file located on our network
that several users access at different times to enter
data. On two workstations, XP Pro and Windows 98 SE, we
are unable to access the database file, however at all
other workstations we are able to access it. Double
clicking the file from the two workstations prompts a
dialog box that reads "Microsoft Access. The Microsoft
Jet database engine cannot open the file [file name]. It
is already opened exclusively by another user or you need
permission to view its data." In the past the user was
able to open this file without any problem and after
checking it out, we find that no one has the file opened
when the user tries to access it and receives this
message. Permissions for the users having issues have not
changed as well.

Any ideas in how to resolve this issue would be
appreciated.

Hi, Michele.

Make sure that all database users, including both of these blocked users,
have "Full Control" Windows security permissions on the network shared
directory where the networked database file is located, even if someone has
decided that these users cannot be trusted with anything more than "Read
Only" permissions.

If user-level security has been applied, then make sure that both of the
blocked users have Open/Run Database permissions assigned to at least one of
the workgroup Groups that they belong to or assigned to their individual
workgroup user accounts.

HTH.
