Cannot open itunes or quicktime

I have installed itunes and quicktime however when I try to open either one I
get an error message that says "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to
close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

There is mention here, of going to Add/Remove and using the
Repair option for Quicktime.
