Cannot Open Explorer Windows

Windows XP Home edition
Service Pack 2

I can't run a full system scan from onecare.live.com because my computer
won't run the download. I have pop-up blocker turned off and Java enabled but
still nothing works.
I read on that site that there are Java trojans and I'm wondering if there's
a way to detect them in registry.

I'm talking about the scanner you have to install onto your computer,
nothing that could actually fix my computer's problem is being allowed to
install. I've downloaded trial versons of programs that ended up being duds
and now I can't uninstall them. My search function has a new feature, it
won't exit the window, even though it can't perform the search, claiming the
window "is busy" now. I was able to download a small rootkit searcher that
found two suspicious items:
HKLM\SECURITY\Policy\Secrets\SAC*
HKLM\SECURITY\Policy\Secrets\SAI*
I'm not sure if that means anything, but I do suspect a virus because all
the computers in my home have suffered the same symptoms within the past week.

I just responded to this but I can't see my reply and I haven't read anything
about a delay, so I'm rewriting it, sorry if it pops up twice.
I was talking about the onecare scanner you download to your computer, it
didn't say anything about a "trial version" anywhere on the pages I read.
Anyway, nothing that will actually work for the benefit of my computer is
allowed to install on my computer. Now my search page refuses to search for
anything and also refuses to close, unless I restart.
I've downloaded several trial versions of programs that didn't help anything
but now my computer won't let me uninstall them. I still can't go into My
Pictures or My Documents.
I was able to download a Rootkit Revealer that found two "suspicious
insidences":
HKLM\SECURITY\Policy\Secrets\SAC*
HKLM\SECURITY\Policy\Secrets\SAI*

I know it has to be a virus because all of the computers in my house came
down with similar symptoms but reacted slightly different in recovery.
Something tried to delete the disks and get rid of the boot file, leaving me
with a black screen telling me there was no disk(not exact wording). The
computer recovering in this post is the one with the worst problems.
I would greatly appreciate any help that doesn't include "total reformat", :).

Singapore Computer Service

Hello,

You may want to do a spyware scan by using the following programs (free)
http://www.superantispyware.com/
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Otherwise, you can use System Restore in safe mode instead. See
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304449 (How to start the System Restore tool
by using the safe mode option with the Command prompt in Windows XP) for a
detailed guide on this.

Note that when you do a System Restore, you will lose configuration changes
that you did from the point that your restored to. So if you had installed
any new software, it will be affected.

Thank you, Singapore, for your suggestions.
The System Restore wasn't turned on at the time this computer started
behaving funny, or it would have been my first option.
What I really need to find out is what configuration makes My Pictures and
My Documents inaccessible. That is the point I'm at right now because - I
have a feeling that if I can fix that - I'll be able to download Mcafee,
which I have a subscription to. I downloaded it onto my other computer and so
far I haven't had any more issues. But I can't even download it onto this
computer, and that's what I'm trying to to do right now.
