cannot open Excel spreadsheets

n Hello,

I cannot open my Excel spreadsheets. I saved them on a key, the tried to
open them on a new computer with Vista and Works installed. The spreadsheet
files didn't open, presumably because Works is incompatible wth Excel. I
have tried opening these files on a computer that has Microsoft Office
installed.

The files do not open and the computer asks me to "Select the encoding that
makes your document readable." I have no idea which encoding to choose. I
don't want to mess up.

Please help. It took more than a year to create these spreadsheets.

Thank you,

Mary

Your storage device is likely encrypting the file. Look at the instructions
for the key.

Thank you for your reply JNW.
I have a USB key and no instructions came with it. Is there anything else I
can do?

I'm merely guessing on the encryption. I would do a search on the model and
make of the drive either on Google or on the manufacturers website.

Thanks JNW. I got to open the Excel spreadsheets once I changed the file
application. Don't know why it wasn't originally Excel though...
In anycase, thank you once again for your help.
