Cannot open excel files

I have a Windows 2000 machine w/ Office 2000, for some reason it will not
open Excel files anymore. When I open and Excel files the "Excel.exe has
created an error" box appears, then I get another box that says "Can't find
the file (or one of its components) that I am trying to open. If I run Excel
in /safe mode or /automation mode it works fine.

Help, anyone.

Sometimes the file that holds your toolbar customizations can get bloated and
corrupted.

You could try this...

Close excel
windows start button|search (or find)
*.xlb
(Look for hidden files in hidden folders, too)

Rename all of them to *.xlbOLD.

Start excel normally and see if it works ok.

If yes, then dump those *.xlbOLD files and customize your toolbar at your
leisure.

If there's still problems, then close excel and rename the *.xlbOLD files back
to *.xlb (no harm, no foul!).

And one more thing, close excel and clean up your windows Temp folder.

Windows start button|Run
%temp%
is a quick way to get there.

I did some further investigating and found that we have an Add-in that keeps
loading. If I open Excel in safe mode and uncheck the Add-in the Excel will
work fine. But if I open Windows explorer and double-click on an Excel file
the Add-in will load and cause the error.

Is there anyway I can cause the Add-in to never load again?
